Lesson Policies
Student Expectations
All students taking piano lessons are required to own a piano or keyboard by the end of the first month of lessons. An acoustic piano is recommended for students who intend to study piano long-term or become professional musicians. However, an electronic keyboard is acceptable, provided that the keys are fully weighted. Keyboards for beginning students must contain at least 61 fully weighted keys. Once the student reaches intermediate level, they are expected to upgrade to a piano or keyboard with 88 fully weighted keys. Minimum age requirement for students is 6 years old. For online video lessons, a good internet connection is required to ensure sufficient audio and video quality for the duration of the lesson time.
Regular practice time between weekly lessons is essential to serious piano study and will allow the student to progress and learn music at a steady rate. Students are expected to practice at least 4-5 days a week. Recommended practice times are as follows:
-
Beginning students: 10-20 mins / day
-
Intermediate students: 25-35 mins / day
-
Advanced students: 35-45 mins / day
*Practice times for teenage and adult students learning for leisure may be discussed and adjusted to account for busy school/work schedules. For young children, parents are encouraged to ensure their child gets enough practice time, free of distractions.
Missed and Cancelled Lessons
Students are allowed one lesson absence per month. In the case of illness, injury, or emergency, a refund for the missed lesson may be offered. Lessons missed for any other reason may not be refunded unless I am notified of absence at least 48 hours in advance. For permanent cancellation of lessons, a partial refund may be given if I am notified at least one week in advance.
Materials
Students should have all lesson materials ready at the start of each lesson. This includes lesson books, sheet music and any other assignments given. For books and sheet music purchased by me, full reimbursement will be required.
